Easy pasta

Image
I just got done with work and as most things come to mind, I called up the mains to go somewhere and get something to eat. When you're hungry or if it deals with food, its an automatic acceptance. I was expecting to go to a restaurant or plate lunch joint, but he said there was food so I ate at his place. We had shrimp linguine with chicken and some side garlic bread. I never had this type of pasta so I was kind of amazed? I was so used to the regulars with cream or tomato sauce. There wasn't linguine so it was substituted with spaghetti, but it was still good. From what I heard it had butter, herb seasonings (oregano), olive oil and parmesan. Such simple ingredients can make a good meal, I guess its true that small things can go a long way.

gobble gobble day

My boss gave us turkeys for our thanksgiving. Its my first turkey and I had no idea what to do or how to make it. What made it more complicated was I worked the morning shift at my other job. Thankfully I have someone who cooks on most holidays for his family and I asked for help. The night before thanksgiving I went over and learned how to prepare the stuffing and turkey. The neck and gizzard were boiled to add to the stuffing. He sliced 4 loaves of bread to bite sized pieces and added cream of mushroom, celery, onion, minced olives, poultry seasoning. After the turkey was dried, rubbed with butter or oil, stuffed and tied, my boyfriend placed mines on a rack and in a pan. He gave me directions on how to roast it: preheat the oven and roast at 200 degrees until the marker pops up, baste and bump up the temperature until it browns. It turned out great.

korean

Restaurant week and sadly they didn't like any of the choices. Originally we all planned to go Haleiwa Joes in the North Shore because my cousin them didn't want to wait until 430 for Kaneohe to open or a line. Driving on the H3, my boyfriend and I were looking at the menu on our phone and realized the prime rib wasnt being served until dinner which starts at 5. That was the main reason we chose that place and what time was it? It was around 12. There was no way we would wait that long, we even starved ourselves that morning so we made a U-turn and headed towards Ala Moana to Gens. Gen is an all you can eat Korean BBQ House. Brisket, steak, intestines, shrimp, bulgogi, garlic chicken, japchae, samgyupsal. Finally after so long, I got my fill of Korean food. It was worth it for $16 per person and a 2 hr limit. Go during lunch everybody, its cheaper than our old favorite Sikdorak lol.

work day

Im been kinda busy lately so my blogs been lacking on interesting things about food. Every Saturday my boss goes to China town before opening up the store. Normally he brings pastries, dumplings, noodles, char siu, or chicharron. He asked what I wanted the day before and I requested for jook. Jook is a rice porridge dish that basically you create, and by that I mean you can pretty much add whatever meat or ingredient you want. My boss wanted to try something new before and bought it with meat balls, liver, intestines, and sometimes tripe. I liked it and it wasn't weird or anything because I ate animal insides in dishes like dinuguan, commonly know as "chocolate meat." What made it better today was that the weather permitted it, it was gloomy and pouring rain. He also got other things. The noodles remind me of the manapua days where Id drown them in their shoyu/hot sauce mixture. Another new thing was the dumpling which had mushrooms, pork, carrots, and bitter melon. ...

pumpkin bars

Seeing that Thanksgiving is around the corner and pumpkin is a definite must, heres another take on pumpkin "pie". A coworker introduced this during a pot luck and I couldnt stop eating it. The others thought so also and said it would go good with coffee. Chewy brownie layer topped with oreos and cheesecake. I had to get the recipe and the instructions from the website delish seemed so easy. I want to make this next time I go to my boyfriends house and share with them because they love to bake. Ingredients 1 box brownie mix and other ingredients listed to make it cream cheese pumpkin puree sugar eggs vanilla extract pumpkin spice oreo cookies caramel for topping Im going to summarize the parts and link the site down below for further details. First make the brownie mixture and pour into a pan. Add oreos and cover with pumpkin cheesecake mixture. Top with more oreos and bake for 50 min. http://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/recipes/a5626...

spicy ahi

Image
Located in Waimanalo is a food truck parked across of 7-11 and the beach park. SOOO FAT specializes in Hawaiian food and their menu from what I heard changes from time to time. There was steak, chicken, char sui pork, and poke bowls. I got the spicy ahi bowl, and it was different from the regular ones you'd get from Food land. The sauce had a kick, but it was kind of watery that it drowned my rice. I dont like my poke bowls too saucy or soaking my rice. The ahi or tuna chunks seemed like they were bathed in lemon also from the texture I was getting. Overall it was good. If you want to know an easy method of making spicy mayo, heres how: 1. Whisk together mayo and sriracha sauce until evenly combined 2. Add lemon juice if desired.

day in the life

This weeks food take is from CPK, California Pizza Kitchen. We ordered spinach artichoke dip as an appetizer, but didn't receive it until after we got our pasta and pizza. Its okay though, for the wait it was on the house. The description for the mains are listed below: ROASTED GARLIC CHICKEN PIZZA  Sweet caramelized onions, fresh Mozzarella, Parmesan, slivered scallions and cracked black pepper GARLIC CREAM FETTUCCINE  Garlic Parmesan cream sauce with fresh Italian parsley. Also available with chicken, shrimp, chicken & shrimp, or sautéed Cremini mushrooms. Overall I thought the food was alright, not bad, but it needed something else. The pizza was kind of bland, there was little chicken or wasnt spread out so I had to add pepper to get more flavor. I liked the pasta though, we had both chicken and shrimp so it made up for it.

Easy ice pops

Image
Known in the Philippines as ice candy, they are easy to make and takes you back to ones childhood there. I had some halo-halo mixture laying around and decided to use it. Halo-halo means to mix and has young coconut, coconut gelatin, chickpeas, mung beans, and jackfruit. Typically halo-halo is made with shave ice, but as a lazy way I decided to to freeze them in bags lol. Ingredients: 1 bottle of halo-halo preserved fruit mix 1/2 cup condensed milk 1 cup milk Its a pretty simple process. Strain the syrup from the bottle and divide the contents into ice candy bags. Mix the milk and condense milk then pour into bags. Be careful because the bags are small in size and can be a bit tricky. Once you've reached a desired length, tie bags and place on plate. I like to move the bag around before freezing so the halo-halo mixture doesn't stay in the bottom. Wait until hardened and there you have it. If you don't like halo-halo, some people use chocolate milk powder, avoca...

vinegar

Aside of the pizzas, lemonade, or crab I ate this week that I forgot to capture, heres some information to a common ingredient in cooking. As a kid, I used vinegar as a base for apples, slightly ripen papayas, and guavas. Just throw them in a bowl, add salt, pour on vinegar and you have yourself a snack. Vinegar can be used for many things. Its basically fermented sugar thats turns into acetic acid giving us its sour taste. Some benefits from it are disinfecting, food preservative, and healing properties. From friends, I learned they use vinegar in rice to help it last longer or in the laundry to get rid of odor. Ive seen my dad soak his swollen feet in vinegar diluted with water. The most interesting experience I had with the vinegar mixture was after funeral mass where an elderly rubbed and slapped my forehead with it. Its a filipino tradition thats been done before that they follow. Its sort of used to clean all the worries so your head will not get a headache also.

street food

Hi, welcome! I grew up in an Filipino family eating authentic foods such an Dinuguan, Adobo, Pinakbet etc. We live in the country side of the island so back then we would grow or raise what we'd eat for the most parts. I would say my dad was the person who still brought the Philippines with him. Whenever he was outside burning wood to cook pig food, the memories of our vacation recollected. Its been 9 years now. My cousin's wife ran a food stand just at the end of our street. Relatives and neighbors would come and that's how she made business. Fishball, kikiam (a sausage like dish), palaming (cold drinks), and empanada. They cost maybe 5-20 pesos which is equivalent to less than a dollar. For such a low price, they could easily satisfy your cravings and is the reason why I enjoy street foods. Empanadas are my favorite. They're deep fried with shredded papaya, longanisa, egg, and sometimes monggo beans. The dough is made from rice flour and atsuete powder which giv...
